IMPORTANCE OF FEMALE DEITIES IN HINDUISM

INTRODUCTION :

Hinduism is an ancient religion, and the Hindu gods and goddess are described as supreme deities. In Vedas and Puranas, the importance of gods and goddesses are mentioned, and apart from the male gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, female goddesses like Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati are also given much importance in Hinduism. Similar to giving importance first to our mother, most of us are giving much importance to mother goddesses, since we are considering them as our divine mother.

Hindus worships Parvati Devi as Shakti Devi, for getting good prospects in their life, and she is considered as the protector of the entire universe. Lot of temples are dedicated for Parvati Devi, and similar to her, Lakshmi Devi is worshiped for getting good name, fame and wealth, and Mata Saraswati is worshiped for getting good knowledge and wisdom. Ancient Rishi Pathnis are considered as very pure and chaste women, and due to that, they contain great powers, similar to their consorts.

Famous Rishi Pathnis like Arunthathi, Anusuya and Lopamudra are considered as incarnations of Mata Parvati, and they are worshiped along with their consorts. Renuka Devi, wife of Rishi Jamadagni had become a goddess, and she is known as Renuka Parameswari, and various temples are dedicated to her throughout India.

Mother goddesses show much love and affection on us, and they would protect us in times of dangers and difficulties. Similar to a mother feeding her child, they would relieve us from hungriness, and gives all kinds of prosperities in our life. Arthanareeswara aspect is widely worshiped by the Hindus, since Mata Parvati occupies half of the body of Lord Shiva, and by the way, she shows that both Shiva and Shakti are one and the same.

When children suffers from small pox, measles and from virus fevers, most of the mother belonging to Hindu community, would take their children to the Shakti Devi temples, and would pray to her for quick recovery of their children, and also uses the Neem tree leaves by rubbing gently on the body of their children.

Mother goddesses didn’t expect much cleanliness in our body, but they expect us to have a pure mind. We can fondly call them as Ma, Mata or Amma, and can list out our needs and necessities in front of their deities or pictures. Mother goddesses are to be worshipped mainly by the orphaned children, and they can treat the divine mother as their own mother.

Mata Meenakshi Amman shrine is located at Meenakshi Amman temple, Madurai, and she contains big eyes, and it can be compared with that of the eyes of fish. Those who suffer from eye diseases are suggested to worship Mata Meenakshi Amman at the Meenakshi Amman temple, in order to get relieved from their eye related diseases.

Mata Sheethala Devi is a form of Mata Parvati Devi, and she can be worshiped for getting relieved from all kinds of diseases, and her temples are situated all over India. Lakshmi Devi temples are situated all over India, and among that, Kohlapur Mahalakshmi Temple at Maharashtra is a very famous temple of Lakshmi Devi, and regularly, lot of devotees would come from all parts of India, in order to worship her.
