INTRODUCTION
Sri Kamala Vinayagar Temple is located near ICF Bus Terminus, and it is a big temple, which contains lot of shrines of other deities also.
In the Main Shrine
Lord Vinayaka is worshipped as Kamala Vinayagar. Apart from the main shrine, shrines for Lord Shiva, Shakti, Hanuman, Navagrahas, Muruga and Ayyappa are also available inside the temple. ICF is close to Ayanavaram and Villivakkam, and hence lot of devotees from these areas would regularly visit this temple, in order to worship the first god Vinayaka.
In the main shrine, Lord Vinayaka can be seen holding the Kamala (Lotus flower) in his hands, and hence he is known as Kamala Vinayaka. As per ancient legend, due to a curse, Ma Lakshmi Devi had performed severe penance on Lord Vinayaka in order to re-unite with Lord Vishnu. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Vinayaka had appeared before her, relieved her from her curse, and made her to unite with Lord Vishnu.
According to another legend, Lord Vinayaka had destroyed the powerful demon Sindoorasan in the present place of the temple. Sindoorasan was a powerful demon who lived during the Treta Yuga, had given lot of troubles to the demi gods in the heaven and to the ordinary people in the earth. Hence as per their prayers, Lord Vinayaka had killed him. School and college students used to visit this temple before their exams, in order to get good results.
As per ancient legend, it is believed, that as per the advice of his father Mahabali, Demon Namuchi, had visited this place during the Treta Yuga, and installed a small Shiva Lingam at the present place of this temple, and performed puja to that Lingam.
During Vinayaka Chaturthi festival day, lot of devotees from all over Chennai would visit this famous temple of Lord Vinayaka in order to attain goodness in their lives.
