INTRODUCTION
Chakrapani Temple is a wonderful temple dedicated to Lord Sudarsana, the Holy Chakra of Lord Vishnu, and it is situated in Kumbakonam. This temple is located near Kumbakonam Railway Station, in this temple, Lord Vishnu appears in the form Sudarsana Chakra, and this temple is considered to be one of the popular temples in Kumbakonam. I have visited this excellent Vishnu Temple during August 2022.
Lord Brahma, is believed to have installed the idol of Lord Sudarshana at the place where the temple is presently located. Surya worshipped Sudarshana and he got additional powers and hence his brightness was increased tremendously. The Kumbakonam City was once known as Bhaskara Kshetra, since Lord Surya had once visited the present place of the temple.
As per legend, Lord Surya used to worship Lord Chakrathazhwar during Masi Magam and every year Masi Magam festival is celebrated at this temple in a grand manner. As per legend, once during the time of churning of the Divine Ocean, Parkadal, it is believed that some portion of the divine nectar fell down at this temple, and also in few other temples present in Kumbakonam Town. Vinayakar, Panchamuga Hanuman and Ma Lakshmi Devi are the important idols found in this temple. The temple is built on the banks of River Kaveri. Vilva (Bilwa) archana is also performed here for Lord Vishnu.
In the temple city of Kumbakonam, many ancient temples are situated. During ancient times, and even still now, it is believed that celestials like Lord Vishnu, Indra, Vayu, Agni, Vinayaka and Muruga Bhagavan used to visit the temple town of Kumbakonam in order to bless their devotees, and these details are mentioned in an ancient Tamil text, “THIRU KUDANTHAI KOVILGAL VARALARU”.
Hence let us visit the temples present in the famous temple town Kumbakonam in order to get blessings from the thirty three crore Devas.
