INTRODUCTION
Similar to the marriages of human beings, marriages of the deities also takes place in the temples, and among the marriages of the deities, marriage function of Lord Muruga, and Mata Devasena is considered as the most important auspicious one. During Vedic period, during the time of the marriage event of the deities at the temples, sometimes, the divine couples themselves would arouse from the idols, and they would bless the temple priests and the devotees for a few seconds, and then they would disappear! But nowadays we can’t except to witness such a wonderful divine darshan of the deities!
Devasena is the mother goddess and the beautiful consort of Lord Muruga, and she is also known as Deivanai. Devasena is believed to be the daughter of Lord Indra, the chief of the demi gods, and she had got married with Lord Muruga in Tirupparankunram Murugan Temple. During the time of the divine wedding function of Lord Muruga with Ma Devasena, their idols would be decorated with flowers, flower garlands, and golden ornaments and nice garments would also be adorned at Sri Thiruparankundram Subramania Swamy Temple, and a grand wedding ceremony would be held with the sound of drum beats for Lord Muruga and his consort Ma Deivanai. During the prescribed auspicious time, the sacred knot would be tied to Ma Devasena, by the temple priest. One of the most celebrated festivals after the Chithirai festival is the marriage event of Lord Muruga at Thiruparankundram Temple which is being held during the Tamil month Panguni.
The festival commences by hoisting the flag and the wedding of Lord Muruga and Deivanai would takes place in a grand manner. During this auspicious event, various types of holy baths (Abhishekam) also would be performed to Lord Muruga and Deivanai during early morning hours.
The decorated idols of Ma Meenakshi Amman and Lord Sundareswarar would also be taken from Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple, and it would be kept in the Tiruparankundram Murugan Temple, till the completion of the most auspicious marriage ceremony of Lord Muruga with Ma Devasena. Every year Thousands of devotees used to come to this temple, in order witness the divine marriage event of the divine couple, Lord Muruga and Deivanai.
