Once there lived a great king in Ayodhya called Dasaratha, He has three wives Kausalya, Sumitra and kikeyi. But the king has no children, for this reason the king performed putra kameshti yagam with the help of sage Rishyasringa. Queen Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama, queen sumirtha gave bith to Lakshmana and Shatrughna and queen Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharatha. From the childhood Laxman dedicated himself to Rama.
Sita discovered in a furrow while ploughing in a field by King Janaka ruler of Mithila and his wife Sunayana.Sita devi is also referred to as the daughter of bhudevi (mother of earth).
When King Janka realizes that Sita has come of marriageable age, he arranges her swayamvaram. The Sage Viswamitra attends swayamvaram with Rama and Lakshmana. Many nobel princes from several kingdoms came aspiring for the hand of beautiful Sita Devi. King Janaka declares that he would give his daughter’s hand in marriage to the person who would be able to lift the bow of Shiva and string it. But many princes were overwhelmed by bow and turned away.
Rama then comes forward to lift the bow at Vishwamitra’s command .Lord SreeRama prayed for the grace of Lord Shiva and went, and he easily lifted the bow single –handedly and when he draws the string, it breaks. Sita Devi came and garlanded Rama and accepted him as her husband. Rama gets married to Sita, Lakshmana to Urmila, Bharatha to Mandavi and Shatrughan to Shrutakirti.
